"Mapp" is a San Diego based, innovative biopharmaceutical company focused on addressing unmet medical needs through the development of life-saving monoclonal antibody treatment options to combat a variety of neglected and tropical infectious diseases. The Early Research and Development Group (ER&DG) and the Advanced Research and Development Group (AR&DG) at Mapp Biopharmaceutical are responsible for the execution of high quality Research and Development activities to ensure the achievement of robust portfolio with the CMC, Toxicology, and Clinical development goals consistent with the product development objectives of Mapp.  The Scientist I Cell Line Development is a technical position and will provide cell line selection and early-stage upstream/downstream process expertise to cross-functional development project teams. The Scientist I will support the implementation of technical and project management activities across Discovery, Candidate Selection, and Phases I IV studies relating to cell line selection and upstream process development for a given indication and/or product(s).

Basic Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 6-8 years of experience in an early discovery and clinical/commercial development of biologics
  • Strong knowledge in molecular biology and cell biology
  • Experience with execution of cell culture or purification studies in support of process development and characterization for therapeutic proteins from mammalian cells
  • Experience with functioning as the cell culture or purification subject-matter expert in cross-functional teams
  • Experience in evaluating and implementing new technologies
  • Relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Complete familiarity with mammalian expression systems for recombinant proteins
  • Ability to significantly contribute to technical teams to achieve expected performance standards
  • Demonstrated excellence in the following competency areas:
    • Multiple PCR and molecular cloning techniques
    • Protein expression in mammalian cell systems
    • Optimization of expression plasmid vector sequences to improve cell line productivity and stability

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Protein purification: affinity size exclusion, ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction chromatography using AKTA systems
  • Experience with protein characterization and analytical methods
  • Familiarity with CMC activities, regulatory filings and supporting regulatory inspections internally and at CMOs
  • Experience with execution of cell culture or purification studies in support of process development and process characterization for mammalian products
  • Experience with experimental design and analysis of experimental data using statistical methods and software
  • Experience working with contract laboratories and manufacturing organizations
  • Understanding of the cGMPs and how these apply to development, scale-up, and commercialization of licensed biologics products
  • End-to-end understanding of biopharmaceutical product development lifecycle
  • Ability to lead and manage technical teams to achieve expected performance standards


  • Performs cell line development and early-stage upstream/downstream process development of mammalian hosts for production of recombinant therapeutic proteins
  • Executes bench-scale laboratory experimentation for cell line development of high-producing clones, including, but not limited to, vector construction, transfection, clone selection, phenotypic/genotypic characterization, cell banking and initial cell culture/purification process development.
  • Contributes to operation and preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Performs process characterization as required
  • Evaluates and implements the cutting-edge technologies to improve bioprocess performance, productivity, and robustness
  • Establishes sound laboratory procedures and practices following operational excellence principle for maximum efficiency and reliability
  • Ensures and is accountable for compliant and safe laboratory practices at Mapp
  • Performs technical management of multiple projects concurrently in the laboratory
  • Maintains detailed records of all experiments performed
  • Presents and communicates experimental results to the group effectively
  • Works effectively in teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds
  • Acts as a role model and a mentor to junior staff for leadership attributes as required
  • Willingness to Travel less than (10%)
